John
and Jo Freudenstein own and operate Barwidgee Lavender. They moved to the area
six years ago, buying 125 acres of totally unimproved land in the spectacular
Happy Valley at Rosewhite.
They
began by camping on weekends whilst building the "shed" that then became
home for three years until their house was relocated and renovated. The lavender
plantings have been gradually developed with John and Jo propagating, planting,
harvesting and then distilling the essential oil.
The
first varieties were planted in 2000 and have now reached their maturity and are
producing exceptional oil. The Alpine Region's climate is particularly suited
to lavender, with extremely cold winters and hot dry summer temperatures.
The
latest stage of their venture has been the opening of a licenced cafe and gift shop to
showcase their unique range of aromatherapy skin & body care products.
Johns
skills as a builder and furniture maker are clearly evident in the cafe. There
are individual pieces of furniture for sale as well as smaller items such as cheese
boards.
The shop counter
and table tops are made by John from 150 year old timber roof battens salvaged
from the renovation of the nearby Homestead Estate Bed & Breakfast.
